Why blueberry?
Blueberry is very popular among growers and
consumers because of the tasty, attractive berries. Bushes can be
grown on mineral and organic soils. Blueberry plantation can be a good idea,
as a source of additional income for small growers, or as a basis
the operation of a larger farm.
Soil requirements and
climatic
Highbush blueberry grows in humus-rich soils, sufficiently
damp
and strongly acidic - pH from 3.8 to 4.5 (measured in KCl). It fails on compact, alkaline soils
and dry. Prefers warm, sunny positions, if possible
sheltered from winds (hedges). Depending on the variety, the shrubs tolerate frosts ranging from -25
down to -34 oC.
Varieties - nursery material
Traditionally, blueberry varieties are divided into early, medium and late varieties. Worthy in the early
group
the commands are: Patriot,
Duke,Spartan. The mediums include: Bluecrop,Bluegold.
Among the late ones, it can be distinguished Nelsona,Chandlera,
Brigittę.
Blueberry plantation
The plantation can be established both in the spring
and in the fall. Plants planted in autumn (September-early October) will have time
enlarge the root ball. Spring planting, on the other hand, avoids the potential
frost damage.
The spacing of rows and distances between bushes should close
respectively: 3-3.5 m for rows and 0.8-1.2 m between bushes.
Blueberry
is a largely self-pollinating plant, but it is good to plant 2 varieties on the plantation -
cross pollination gives better quality fruit
Fruit harvest
Blueberry varieties ripen from the beginning of July to the end of September, on average from one variety
fruit is harvested for 2-4 weeks. The fruits ripen unevenly and
therefore they are collected 3-4 times at intervals of several days. The fruit can be kept in the usual
cold store for several days.
